Have You Been Through A Storm?

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

Have you been through a storm? Have you experience a new level of stress or of anxiety? Do not know what is going to happen next in your life?  We got you covered and can show you all the right ways to go about your storm and calm the waters.

A storm is a growing period in your life. In the midst of the storm, you are growing and you become powerful when you believe and let go of your control.

Psalm 34: 17 “Those who are right with the Lord cry, and He hears them. And He takes them from all their troubles.”

1. God is with you in the storm

Storms of life are not easy.  They are so exhausting. They make you feel like you cannot control anything.  They can bring you down.  I understand completely.  I have been through so many storms, and as my faith grows my storms become harder.  I remember when my faith was just in the beginning.  I would give an extra $20 dollars and I would see a miracle the next hour!  It was like man, please do that again, but now that I am stronger.  God doesn’t deliver that easy anymore, but I have those memories of those storms. I know God is with me now when they are hurricanes and heavy rain storms. Because he was with me in the tiny storms where I needed to just give a little bit and received a lot.

Recently, a storm that was so big.  I did not know how we were going to pay rent the other month.  We over spent.  My husband kept telling me. Oh, I will work overtime.  I will sell something.  We will be okay, but sitting down and doing the finances.  I knew that we were not okay!  We were going to have to dip into our emergency fund, and it was not for an emergency!  But God showed up in the storm.  Our landlord, offered us to use our credits for utilities for our rent payment that month.  He made it work when I knew mathematically it was not going to!  We were short.  We were out of our budget, but God is in control.

2. Find your connection

When you feel like you are failing. When you feeling like no one is with you.  When you feel like you don’t know how you are going to make it.  Find God and cry out to your connection.  Shoot for the stars on this one.  Find your hopes.  Find your reason. You can do this, and get through the storm with the right connections.  Do not give up.

Your faith should be your number connection.

Psalm 34:17 “The righteous cry out, and the lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”

God helps those in their troubles whether it is financially with your budget, you are trying to grow your networth, or you are trying to be healthy and still have your groceries in budget.  God helped so many king who were wealthy.

Put your trust in him and connect with him!

If you have never had a relationship with him, that is okay!  He loves to deepen relationships with people.

If you have a relationship with him, but feel like he’s not showing up.  Trust me – he is there.  Talk to him daily, hourly, every time you need.  He is your foundation.  You can always build your bones back up.  The doctor tells me to just drink some milk!

Our heavenly father tells us just to talk to him and build a connection with him.

3. Nothing can stop the peace coming your way

I always know when I am trying to do all things on the earth myself and lose sleep, lose control, have anxiety, and I am feeling down.  I know I am trying to hard myself and without one person. That is when I let go.

You can go on a walk by yourself.

Go to the gym.

Go have a cup of coffee.

Snuggle your pets.

Build your selfcare routine.

Selfcare with your budget?  How do I do that?  Easy – build a routine you love!  Whether it is sitting on your bed, with a fancy pen and fresh pad of paper, or your favorite budget journal.  You can build a money selfcare routine.

Want to know mine?  During nap time, I sit on my bed with my klove music on and deep dive into the excel sheet– the yearly bullet budget journal and see how much our networth has increased, where we have decreased our spending in the yearly summary and where our goals are headed.  I also love to see the blessing that have happened throughout the year and the last year!

When you let go and do your selfcare routine.  God shows up.  You will have what I call a God moment when only you understand that he is showing you a sign, showing you peace, you feel all your heavy weight on your heart just easy up.

Yes, you can have peace.  Yes, you will be able to see your glory everywhere on earth.

Psalm 72: 19 “Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen”

4. Let your guard down

You have to do this one in the middle of your storm.  Let your guard down. Ladies and gentlemen, I know this is hard.  It is hard for me too!  I am not going to say it is easy.  It has been hard since the beginning of time with Adam and Eve.

Trust the history and the bible.

Trust the way it works out.

He will be fair with everyone.  When you are good, he will be even better.  That’s why you always hear at church, give and we will do so much more with your money that you could imagine.  It is true because God shows up even more.  I heard on the radio this morning that this guys favorite part of his job was that he gave away cars to people who needed them!  When I heard that I was like Oh, my I want that!  I remember when I did that with my boyfriend…now husband.

Psalm 72:7  “In His days may all go well with those who are right and good. And may there be much peace until the moon is no more.”

The only thing I will ever do is tell you what God is telling me to tell you.

People tell me you cannot be wealthy and have faith.  God only blesses those who are poor.  I will tell you right now – that is 100% not true!  God helps those who are wealthy too.  He has helped so many kings, but they have to let their guard down.  They cannot have too much pride.  They have to know that they themselves cannot do it by themselves.  They have to take a step back, and know God got them where they are.

Proverbs 22:2 “The rich and the poor are all created by the LORD.”

Proverbs 22:4 “The reward for humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honor and life.”

Know to let your guard down and ride out the storm.  You will go places you have never been.

5. Trust and have faith

In the scary moment, you look like these days won’t go by any faster.  The days look gloomy.  The days are heavy and you feel like nothing is going to make it go away.

You have to trust and have faith when you do this.  Everything becomes okay. Please do not be scared.

1 John 5:4 “Every child of God can defeat the world, and our faith is what give us this victory. “

You are perfect! You are amazing!  You were created with your talents! You are one of kind!  Open up your heart to the Lord and do not be afraid.

He will give you victory to you!  He will bring you out of your storm and make that storm look so easy once you are through it.

You may not understand that storm right now, and I get it.  There are many storms I’ve been in I do not understand.  Like one at the beginning of 2020.  Let me short story it for you.

I had been with a company for almost 12 years.  My husband told me, “I think you are supposed to stay home with Ember.”  This was a few weeks before my maternity leave was up. I was hit hard.  I thought to myself.  I never wanted to be a stay at home mom.  I always wanted to become the CEO of the company.  I am so career focused – not family focused. This was a storm for me and there are still days of storm as I am a stay at home mom.

God was building me up and I still do not know the entire story, but I am here to tell you.

We are making it each month financially and more!

We are building glory in our family.

We are building memories traveling.

We are living tiny and experiencing a whole new world.

It is all because in this leap of faith in a storm. I put my trust in God.  I trusted it was the right decision for our family.

There are moments, I did not know if we would actually be able to change our habits of spending over $600+ to even $1,000 on food each month because we made a six figure income with the both of us. It was not something we had to think about.  But in all we went from that crazy food budget to less than $400 each month!  You can do it too! Go to our shop and find the tricks to how we did it with our meal planning 101.

You can come out of the storm with a win!

Like if you’ve grown through a storm.

What to do at George Washington National Forest While Staying on Budget!

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

Traveling you know is our favorite part of life and our dream adventure.  We are going to do these posts more often to share our RV tiny living travels.  We will share what we love to inspire you to travel and enjoy the life you have on this earth. Here are the 6 things we loved at George Washington National Forest and hope you find yourself adventuring here too!

Staying at Elizabeth Furnace Recreational Area
Site 5 is two levels

This campground is a diamond – it was only $20 per night and allows you to park your RV in a prime location. This site allows you to stay up to 21 nights, which is another bonus if you want to check out Skyline Dr. in the Shenandoah Mountains, which is an easy drive over to it. Another bonus is that it is open year round and the hand water pump is available year round in the mountains!

You must be strategic with your food when you are boondocking, so you are not throwing away food. Many people learn this the hard way, and we don’t want this to be you. Meal planning is definitely a priority when you do go on the road and boondock.  This helps you save money in two places where you are staying and with your food budget. You want to make sure you have plenty of shelf stable foods rather than a fridge and freezer full of food to throw away because it got ruined if you don’t end up running your generator 24 hours or have solar panels on your RV.  You know you can use dry ice, but that gets pricey! We learned the hard way.

Since this recreational area was a boondocking site, it allows you to learn how to sanitize your fresh water tank too and this is important while traveling.  You can sanitize your water tank in 5 simple steps with ¼ cup of bleach for every 16 gallons of water in your freshwater tank. Make sure to dilute the bleach before adding it to the water tank!

Free showers if you were only tent camping or decided not to fill up your freshwater tank is a plus! Many places charge a dollar to five dollars for a shower at a campground.

A perfect way to get disconnected in this park, because it has no service for T-Mobile. Just the way many people like it.  However, if service is needed all you need is a mobile booster and can easily get access to service.  Sprint and AT&T has service in certain areas of the park.  The prime reason for staying at a national park like Elizabeth Furnace wasn’t the service though, it was a new place to discover.

Learning the History of Iron Making

The park had amazing hikes for kids, and if you are home schooling this would be even better place to go!  We learned all about how pig iron was made on the hike.   It was pretty cool to learn they produced 3 tons of iron a day in 1836. They used the creek to transport the iron to nearby places. I am not much a of history person, but when you put history with an outdoor activity like hiking. I can stop to read a sign for a minute!

Though the suspension bridge over the Passage Creek was built later, it was still awesome!  It was bouncy, which is a kid favorite but not for the dogs! The bridge was actually built to allow the campground guest to go visit the picnic area which leads to the trails for the learning adventure.

Camp Hosts

Always be friendly to the camp host for they know all the secrets of the area.  The camp host in the George Washington National Park had keys to the historic cabin onsite, and being able to see how they lived in the 1800’s with the stove, pots and pans was pretty cool.  The cabin was made out of trees from around the area and all the tools they used were there too. We even got free goodies – BONUS!

Unfortunately, one thing bad happened to us during this adventure, but luckily my husband wasn’t allergic and he got stung and not me!  My husband got a nasty hornet sting, but since we got to know the camp host, we let them know and it was down the very next day we went exploring! That is customer service right there and they are volunteers!  Volunteering their time to help the outdoor community to get a good deal on living more frugally or in a bind to stretch your money.

Another thing about learning your camp host, they will be able to give you recommendations on the best site for your RV or trailer size.  We are glad we took the camp host recommendation, we stayed at site 5!  It had this cool high/low level and allowed our toddler to get her energy out on the man-made stairs instead of wondering out on the road or to another campsite.

The Views

The views of nature are priceless. It cost nothing to just enjoy the scenery around you and listen to it.  We are so thankful for this!  We were able to drive down the road for about 5 miles and just see the mountains full of leaves and the homes off the road with the amazing views.  We always just imagine ourselves in these homes. Waking up with a cup of coffee, and coming out on the front porch during the fall season or just after a snow storm to view the new atmosphere feeling. It is a blessing and of course we are lucky because God created it all! When we give more to this earth than take we receive so many more blessings too.

While you travel, you will learn all the different views and creations that are made, but each area has their own beauty.  It is similar to all of us as humans, we all have our own unique talents, skills, and reason for being here at the time we are here. We all have our own purpose! Plus, the true fresh air the mountains have is breath-taking.

Water Activities

The river had trout in it so if you are a fisherman, this is an added bonus.  You do need your licenses to fish at this park, but it is just a hop, skip away from the campground.  People love running down the trail to get to the water.  Personally, we had to be careful with our toddler otherwise she would have been down river!

In the area, you can drive to a public boat launch, Front Royal Boat Launch only 20 minutes away and get into one of the rivers to go boating or swimming.  It is a great place for kids, dogs, and fun!

The river is all around so there are so many swimming holes you can find. The water near the campground tends to be slower here and a little warmer since it is not a huge river and does not have the cold mountain water coming down as quickly like other swimming holes in the area.

If you are looking to go tubing down the river here, then definitely check out front royal outdoors or skyline canoe in Front Royal Area. $25 to $30 per tube is affordable for most budgets, and if you go during the weekday you can find an even better deal!

Gas Prices

Tell us that you are feeling the price of gas inflation right now?  Yes, us too! Especially in a big RV!  Wait until you are up here to fill up your gas tanks!  It is .20 cents cheaper up here than in Richmond, VA!  We paid $2.73 per gallon and in Richmond, VA it is currently $2.97! Say, hello to friendly people and gas prices! We will be back again, and we encourage you to go stay a visit too!

A clean, friendly park, and the price is just right at this campground!  You do not want to over spend on your budget, but want the entire experience of the great outdoors.  Make sure you get to this place and enjoy the best!

Whether you want to stay at Elizabeth Furnace Recreational Area, learn the history of iron making, get to know the camp host, enjoy all the views, cool down at the river, or fill up on gas just passing through.  You will love George Washington National Forest just as much as we did!

3 Ways God Helps Us Get Out of Trouble Financially.

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

God always gets us out of trouble and he can get you out of trouble too.

“…God raised the Lord Jesus to life. And just as God raised Jesus, he will also raise us to life.  Then he will bring us into presence together with you. All of this is done for you, so that more and more people will know how kind God is and will praise and honor him.” – 2 Corinthians 4:14-15

Any time we are questioning about a big life decision, we always bring it to the Lord first whether it is financially or not. Let me take you on 3 ways God has been there in our life for big decisions, troubled life, and when we just feel horrible.  I tie this all back to finances and how the Lord works miracles to make our money work for us even when we don’t think it will be possible.  It is faith!

1. Big Decisions

Take them to the Lord first and he will either close the doors right away or open the door.  When we wanted to buy a new to us van in Utah, the Lord closed the door for us.  When we wanted to travel the states in 2020, God closed the doors for us fast.  When we wanted to retry and travel the states in 2021 once we were debt free, God opened the doors in one day!

He will do the same for you whether you are deciding on moving to another state, having another child, buying a home, or starting a new career. You find your answers to your big decisions when you get in the word.  He talks to us through his word.

Let us help you write your budget and have God your financial path too!

2. Troubled Life

When you find yourself in trouble over and over again.  Ask the Lord who you can bless and bless someone through you and your life. This works every single time. If you think that nothing ever good happens to me. I want to challenge you to show up in someone else’s life. Stop focusing on your own life and focus on how you can make an impact on others.

While we were traveling from state to state, we were not making any money from a reliable source.  However, when we stopped focusing on ourselves and focused on how we could grow others and give to others in amazing ways.  God showed up and blessed us.  He saved us!  Just as he said in 2 Corinthians 4:14-15, the above versus.

3. Feeling Horrible

At the beginning of my pregnancy, I wrote in my journal.  “Truth bomb, right now…”. “I feel horrible.  My body. My sleep. I feel nausea. I am pregnant.”

I then wrote, “The Lord is good, he is my strength and stronghold in the day of trouble.  He knows (recognizes, has knowledge, and understands) those who take refuge and trust in him” – Nahum 1:7

If you are feeling horrible right now because you are overwhelmed in debt and cannot pay your bills.  God wants you to be strong and confidence in your money.  When you put yourself in the word and even if it is only 5 minutes of your day.  That is more than you did before.  How do I know? Because even when I was feeling horrible.  God provided an income for us, an extra $1,000,  when I was not feeling my best. He planted seeds and built connections in ways I did not know was possible.

Whenever there is a problem, go to the word.  Live the new life. Know that you are powerful with God with your finances.  He wants the best for you and your finances.  He does not want you to struggle each month.  He wants you to give to others.  He wants you to have faith in him for big decisions.

Go rock today and get in the word.  He will help you in any big financial decision you have to make.

Like if you have faith.

Like if you are motivated.

How Living Tiny Has Played A Key Part In Our Dreams To Live Financially Free!

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

Wonder if you can do something as crazy as living tiny to fulfill your dreams to live financially free? You can! Follow these basic principles. Let us show you how we were able to do it even during the pandemic in 2020.

1. Flexibility

Have the flexibility.

Living tiny has given our family flexibility to dream big and be on the path to financial success.

We have had opportunity to be able to have myself be a stay-at-home mom (SAHM).   We started living tiny one month before our wedding in 2019, and had Ember January of 2020.  With a lot of unknowns and Covid19, my spouse told me it would be a good decision to stay home with Ember during my maternity leave.  We did the numbers and digging and decided together we could financially make it happen even paying off our RV early!

This lifestyle has given us the flexibility to say yes to things we also want to do which are … experiences.

Being able to travel and see family every other month gives us happiness.

This is one thing we have learned by reading I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi. 1. Flexibility

2. Leaving A Legacy

Leave something on this earth that is more than you. What will you be remembered for?

My grandpa will always be remembered as a tough, hard on the edges, but soft in the inside dog trainer.

For us, it is family. This is the biggest part of our lives as we believe nothing can break up a family especially if you have your finances in a good stand.

We want to leave Ember and Rivlynn with memories and not of things or material things. Sorry, dad it is more than all the junk in the storage units. The joy to see them when we go on our hikes is breathe taking.

The other day we were driving up the mountain and to see her excitement and her say, “yayayyaya!” makes so much joy within us! Now, watching her grow with Rivlynn make it even better.

Living tiny allows us to just push a button and slide in our slide-outs and go on a budget

3. Sacrifices

You might not be a sacrifice kind of person, but what if it is just for a moment of time to get ahead. It maybe a full-time job for a little bit but not forever. Well unless you keep getting yourself in debt, and living that cycle of paycheck to paycheck.

While you are getting yourself and your family to financial freedom you must make sacrifices, and this is one area I especially have done since college. This year, we grew our net worth $47,000 on one income. We did not even make 6 figures.

I made living sacrifices – living with roommates, living in houses, but renting out a bedroom, etc.

As living tiny was more for an adventure for us.

It ended up being the best sacrifice for us living wise. We are able to pay aggressively on our RV and still live in a space of our own paying cheap rent.  Rent around our city cost upwards to $1200 – $1300 for a one bedroom apartment.  It is even more now, $1400 – $1600. We are able to pay this amount towards our RV and pay it off early to then make moves financially for our family.

Other sacrifices we have made since living tiny are things such as downsizing our wardrobe, kitchen gadgets, furniture, and even food!  Our food we live off of one week budget and have to have a purpose for each item we buy.  This has saved us so much money!  We have turned our food budget from $600+ a month to only $400 a month.  Learn how to do the same in our Meal Planning 101 or get Meal Planning 101 for FREE by purchasing this course!

With this lifestyle we have turned to the minimalist lifestyle too.

We think twice about what we purchase and the things people get us for birthdays, Christmas, baby showers, wedding gifts, etc. They all had to have a purpose for our lifestyle.  This means we only received things we needed.  We told people exactly what we wanted or needed for our family.  Just like how we opened up a 529 Plan for Ember and Rivlynn during the first year they were born.

For me, it has even helped me not buy things that do not give me joy and are a last minute Target buy.  You know when you go to Target for a $5 item and end up buying $200 worth of stuff!  Need help with Target shopping read this.

4. Teachings

Think about the teachings you will be able to share with others. Our daughters have learned so much just within our tiny living adventure. They have learned history, landscapes, geography, and so much more.

The teachings we are able to learn in our own lives living tiny, and even teach others is amazing!  We have learned how to do business in other areas of the country. Learned how to sell and up sell and how to price things differently to different locations.

We love to teach others how to be intentional with their money, know there is more to life than money, God is our biggest provider, and being resourceful of all of his creations.

Like if you want to live financially free.

Like if you are living tiny or your dream too.

Pin it to share to show others they can do whatever their dream is.

Want to live an abundant life, pin it.

3 Budget Friendly Places to Stay and Adventure in St. George, Utah.

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

We love adventuring to state parks because of the trail systems, lakes, and the space from others. These are our three favorite budget friendly places to stay and adventure while we were in St. George, Utah.  They are our favorites for three completely different reasons.  Keep reading to find out the spots to go.

1. Quail Creek State Park

It is a beautiful quiet state park.

This place is open all season which makes it fun to stay in the fall, winter, early spring, and summer. The sites are both dry camp and water and electric. It is a place to go if you want to cool off by the water, boat, or fish.

It is a hidden gem for sure.

We work camped here for 6 months in the winter of 2021- 2022.  We loved it! We had a million-dollar view with volunteering our time and helping the beach look beautiful.

We got to fly our kites because of how windy it gets there. That is why they call it Hurricane, which is pronounced “hurricun.”

The sunrises were breathe-taking. Plus it was cooler once it hit late afternoon because of the canyon and the sun going behind it.

2. Sand Hollow State Park

We loved this park because of the dry camping.  We could dry camp right by the water and this was a huge benefit. The sand is amazing for kids to play in and enjoy the water too. The sunset off the water plus the mountains was relaxing for mom and dad.

If you are into ATVing, this park is the one to go to. It has so many trails.

3. Snow Canyon State Park

We never stayed at this campground, but we came here often to walk their trails.  Some of our favorites we found were Jenny’s Canyon Trail, Butterfly Trail, and Lava Flow.

Jenny’s Canyon is a quick, easy trail.  It is great for kids of all ages.  It is also really cool to see a slot canyon.  Butterfly Trail is a little more difficult, but our 2 year old did it anyone can do it.  It has this really cool red rock to climb. The lava flow trail can be part of the butterfly trail and it has caves you can venture in.  Plus the overflow of lava is neat to be able to experience.  We really enjoyed seeing the red rock, white rock, plus the black lava.

Learn Why We Don’t Have A Storage Unit

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

Oh it feels so good to let go of stuff and love the life that you are living. It feels good to let go of the payment you are paying to keep stuff you might not even use again. You are able to learn through our 4 steps on why we did not have a storage unit and why you should reconsider it too!

1. It’s Just Stuff We Can Replace It

When we began our tiny living adventure both Tom, my husband, and I had our own separate stuff. We had our own treasures — don’t get me wrong. I was living in one bedroom apartment in Richmond, Virginia in high end apartments. My husband was in a 2 bedroom house that he was renting. Overall, we had a few things we needed to get rid of, but the thing is it is just stuff and it can be replaced.

That new couch – replace it.

That TV – replace it.

That dresser – replace it.

2. The Extra Cost Does Not Seem Like A Bill We Want to Pay

When we were first starting this journey of living full-time, we knew that before we set off to travel we would did not want a burden over our heads of a bill. We wanted to be free from all the extra costs except for things like insurance which was protecting us. We wanted to be sure we were protected and that is what insurance does.

A storage unit yes protects your stuff, but stuff you can buy again. I always think you did not bring anything into this world and you cannot take anything out of this world.

Paying for a storage unit meant that we had to have a monthly cost that would cost us more than having to replace all of those items we did not get rid of. Instead we wanted to bless others.

If the groceries are beating your budget, try our course beat inflation.

The yearly budget template for only $25 can help you in know where you are in spending in your 4 walls and to limit your spendings by tracking it. Don’t wait — we want to help you! You have the time to invest in your future!

3. Bless Others

I am a full believe in giving to others and if you follow me for any amount of time you know my story. I have given away many cars and I am humbly grateful that I was in a position to do just that.

When I left my apartment, it took a lot of work to meet up with people on Facebook marketplace. I did sell a lot of things that way like my latte maker, decor, clothes, shoes, etc. But it was so time consuming and people would bail and then you were at ground zero. So instead, I felt in my heart I was to give away the big bulk items in my apartment to the young girl who took over my lease. It felt so good instead. It was a lot easier and joyful for me to be able to bless a young college girl with a full apartment that was just moving to the city and then to keep all of those items or try to sell it for even more through Facebook marketplace or craigslist.

The joy of getting to see her reaction when I said hey do you want to have all of the furniture, TV, bedroom set for $700. She was blown away by my request. I was glad to be able to tell her yes that I was 100% sure I wanted to sell it all for that price.

On earth people think that you will not get repaid for doing acts like this, but when you have faith. God blesses you so much more than what anyone could do to horrid the stuff.

To this day, I get to look back on that moment and think about the joy that she had on her face and that is the main reason why I didn’t want to get a storage unit.

4. We Didn’t Bring Anything Into This World and We Cannot Take Anything With Us at the End of This World

This saying has stuck with me throughout this tiny living journey because we have literally had nothing. We are the most joyful on this journey.

Yes it does have some hard moments and trials. That is because God is working through us and so when God works through us he will help us through those hardships when the Devil comes and attacks us. You must remain faithful and fly like an eagle, a bird, and know that God will provide each and every grain of sand for a bird. He will provide for us.

When I see storage unites being build, I truly think of it as a way that is what this world is made for. People thought of a way to become richer off of others who buy a bunch of stuff because they were trying to find happiness with stuff.

I will also tell you a little hint that you will not find any more happiness until it is inside of you. You have to find happiness within yourself. Find happiness being in the present. Being happy when you have God and faith on your side.

If you are thinking about getting a storage unit because you have decided to live tiny let me give you this food for thought. If you have not tried to live tiny for six months, try it out first before you get rid of all your stuff. Some people do not make living tiny for a month and they want to move back into their house or where they were living.

We live with less stuff and we are happy without all the stuff. You will be happier too because you will find that you have all the blessings in the world.

We want you to subscribe to our blog to stay tuned into the journey! I promise we don’t spam you.

Whether it is tiny living with a baby, budgeting to learn to save more/paying off debt, living your best life, and enjoying what God created us for! Life is just beginning

Budget Ready, but I am still failing at my budget

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

Ever spend all weekend getting your budget ready for the new month, only to have it all fall apart again by day 3 of the month?

The realness is that if you are struggle to keep your budget together, there is likely many things coming against you. Here are the 5 biggest reasons you cannot stay on budget (and what to do about them!)

1. Bills

Your bills are too much. Find ways to lower your bills. Call companies. Get rid of your new car. Find a roommate.

There is always ways to lower your current bills. We have done it plenty of times with rent all the way to our utilities. Rent we negotiated. Ask. It doesn’t hurt to ask your landlord to lower your rent. Utilities, ask to work them off. We have not paid utilities for almost a year and half. We have even received free rent! Yes, there is a way and you can do it too! I am rooting for you, and if you need our help. E-mail me and we can set up a 1:1 Budget Session. We have a special going on right now for 6 months, ask us about it.

2. Food

You are spending too much money on food.

This is the biggest budget buster for budgets.

Track your spending on only food for the month, and meal plan for a week. You’ll be surprised at how much you stop at a gas station or run through a fast food restaurant because you don’t feel like cooking. We have a perfect meal planning 101 guide to help you spend less on groceries and use what you have. You will rarely throw away food and waste it!

1 Corinthians 6:12-13 “…We can do anything we want to. But I tell you that not everything is good for us. So I refuse to let anything have power over me…”Food is meant for our bodies and our bodies are meant for food.” But I tell you that God will destroy them both…”

Food is not our God… Our God is our God. Try not to worship food.

We also have a course for you if this is the area you are struggle due to inflation. Click here.

3. Comparison

Trying to keep up with the neighbors. Yea, we have all be there.

That feeling of wanting something just because they have it. But this is self-care, we’ve learned to just enjoy what we have right in front of us and be content with our own life! This bible verse has helped us stop the comparison game and just be us.

1 Peter 3:3-4 “Don’t depend on things like fancy hairdos or gold jewelry or expensive clothes to make you look beautiful. Be beautiful (and fun) in your heart by being gentle and quiet. This kind of beauty will last, and God considers it very special.”

Talk it out with your spouse or a friend of why you want what they have. It is good to talk it out if you are feeling jealous and are trying to keep up with the neighbors.

How to talk out your emotions?

Write it down it will look like this:

Jealously

ME: “Hey, I am jealous of my friend they have the latest car.”

JEALOUS: “What do you have that they do not have?”

ME: “I get to be working towards being debt free and not have a suffocating car payment.”

JEALOUS: “How does that make you feel now?”

ME: “I am excited, encouraged, feeling grateful for the car I have now and I am going to go wash it!”

JEALOUS: “Yes, go and take care of what you already have because that new feeling of a brand new car is gone in a few days. Make your old car feel new!”

ME: “Thanks for talking me out of being jealous of my friend.”

4. Not Asking For Help

You are not coming to realness that you need help.

Living paycheck to paycheck is rough. Been there! Not fun!

Having to work two or even three jobs because you have to or you want to do more fun things. Really not fun!

We know that 1:1 coaching works or diving into a course like Back to Basic works too!! You need to take a step of faith. You will gain so much more in your finances.

Rather than…struggling!!

When I was struggling with my student loan payments, that is when I first took a budgeting class. We took another budgeting class when my husband and I got married so we both could get on the same page. It is not something to be shameful of, but to be grateful for.

Yes, the truth is hard but even we go through periods where we pay for help to ensure we are on the right path and are making moves to move our net worth to the next level!

It’s not something to be ashamed of, it’s something to be proud of!

5. Emergencies

Emergencies happen every month.

You put it on your credit card only to pay 18% on interest, and interest rates have just raised on credit cards for the 4th time this year. I did a little research on our credit card to see what our interest rate was because I was curious, and I was blown away. It is 26.40% now!

Causing your emergency to double then triple and then just get out of control. Stop and save up for an emergency! Set aside 3 months of expenses into a saving account! It will help your emergencies not happen so often. They will become an inconvience rather than a stressful oh shoot moment!

Mark 4:38 “…’Teacher, don’t you care that we’re about to drown?”…40 Jesus asks his disciples, “Why were you afraid?””

A problem does not mean God doesn’t care or love you! God will take care of you! He will take care of your emergencies when you live by the way he shows us. He shows us that we should pay back our debts and give freely to him. When we follow it, he has spoken to us to share our stories with you so you can learn the ways to manage your money the correct way too. Gods way to pay back your debts, give, save & invest, and spend.

10 Steps to cleanse your budget

People are in a sink or swim moment right now which means that we need to cleanse your budget just as you would cleanse your body by eating certain foods and get all the unnecessary out. Let’s get all the unnecessary out of your budget too.

Bullet Journal Budget Template

Easy way to budget. Each month you can view where you need to cut out your spend a little category. Start small like we did by cutting out one or two subscriptions to save for a baby fund of 10k! You can do it too with the Bullet Journal Budget Template!

$2.99

1. Set savings as a priority. (pay yourself first)

During the time it is necessary, it is even more important to pay yourself first. You can do this by two ways. The first way is how we complete it, and that is by setting up an automatic savings from our checking to our savings. The other way is manually putting your money into your savings, but most likely you will stop doing this after awhile and forget. You will spend it all instead of saving. We recommend doing it the automatic way. Saving is important to let you know that you will be okay when hardships happen, because let me tell you that car breaks down at the most inconvenient time and so does the washer and dryer!

By setting up this pay yourself first, we were able to save $10,000 for our baby fund! Thank goodness Ember says!

Articles you will enjoy to learn more about paying yourself first:

2. Create your budget from expense #1 priority to least priority

Number of our priorities for the budget are: Rent, RV loan “our mortgage”, food, insurance, and gas. If it does not come into these areas we need to rethink and see if we can get them reduced or changes made. Sometimes it is a hard sacrifice for a bit. I know it is not what we want to hear, but let me tell you it is not forever and it will not be.

Live within your means — you will enjoy life better this way instead of charging it on a credit card that you are not able to afford.

3. See where you can decrease expenses

This is a hard one for some because they do not want to cut expenses. We have two cars, if it came down to it. We would sell one of the cars to become in a better financial path. This means we would cut out insurance on 1 car and save monthly plus save on having to do the license registration again when that is up. Many people would be saving on the “car payment” too, but this is not an expense for us because we pay our cars off in cash.

Another area of decreasing expenses would be subscriptions. During the pandemic, we cancelled Netflix. I mean when you need it the most that’s when we said, see you later! We looked at ways to cut our cell phone bill, auto insurance, and so much more. It is just a call away. Pick up the phone and call. I know it can be tough, but it will feel good afterwards.

4. Make a list where you want to cut out the extras.

What is the list of where you want to cut out the expenses you do not need right now. This is where you write it all down and set a day to cancel the “junk” or the excess “food” if you are thinking of it as a cleanse for your body. It will be cutting out the extra for your peace of mind really.

Where we started was bringing our lunches to work, since we work in a grocery store it only made sense to stop spending our money at the store we worked at. It could save you $70 a week, $280 a month, $3,360 a year!

5. Pray about it daily to help you and guide you

This is should have been number 1 in the entire list, but we want you to pray about how to cleanse your budget daily to help you and guide you! Ask for wisdom and knowledge on how to cut unnecessary items. Remember, since we have been in the pandemic and not spending any money and now that places are starting to open up it may be a temptation to go and spend a lot of money you do not have.

Pray for God to guide you and tell you “no” to going out and buying stuff.

How we have had God help us guide us with this saying, “Positive Thoughts. Positive Actions”

6. Start canceling memberships and subscription

This is a no brainer really, but I know people who pay for memberships and subscriptions that they do not even use. Guess how many we have…ZERO! We do not pay for any of these. Why? Because during this time we have found that we do not want to waste our money each month on things we do not use or should not use. Instead we spend more time in nature and bounding together. Yes, sometimes it does get boring but it is better than being broke because of these monthly costs. Remember, we are cleansing your budget. You can GET these back at anytime!

7. Start calling companies to find a deal

As we already mentioned above, you will want to start calling companies to find a deal and many places want to keep you as a customer so they are willing to find you a deal! Phone companies, insurance agencies, TV and other subscriptions, etc.

Call.

Go now.

Please and get yourself some relief.

If you are told no, definitely ask to speak to a supervisor because most likely they are able to get you a deal. We got a deal with Amazon Prime that we paid for a year. We got 3 months for free and at first they told me they could not do anything for me.

8. Watch TV and find commercials to search for a good deal.

TV commercials we have to say are where some of the good deals are. We stopped watching TV for a long time, but now that we watch TV off my parents account we see the good deals. Phone companies paying for phones and creating new unlimited to win you as a customer. Car dealerships offering 0% interest for over 12 months plus no money down. Mortgage companies at the lowest interest rate since a long time. Even furniture deals, but please make sure you can afford all this stuff if you go out and find the good deal. you do not want to get a “good” deal if you do not have the money for it!

9. Pray more about finding a light to saving and give more. Who to bless and what to save for.

As a reminder when cleansing, this is a good thing to do. Who can you bless for free with your time? Who can you be a listening ear for? These simple things make a huge difference!

10. Keep calm and know God got this!

Do not let the worrying keep you up at night, but know that everything will be okay! God has got you and he will not let you fall. Keep calm and know you got this with him!

This is easy to read, but actually really hard. I can remember when I was living on my 3rd month of no income and I felt like the world was crashing down on me, but I had to fight the devil out of my mind. Why? Because I knew that God had me and he told me all I needed to hear was, “Keep calm and let GOD take over.” I love this because when I had Ember, I am afraid of needles, hate the doctors, and everyone thought I wouldn’t make having a kid. Me included!! There was this verse in the Bible that made me make it through the entire process. I kept saying, “I am weak Lord, I am weak!”

2 Corinthians 12:10 “That’s why I take pleasure in my weakness, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

If you learned something, like it.

HOW TO AVOID PAYING BANK FEES!

This post may contain affiliate links, and they are no cost to you!

Wonder how to avoid paying bank fee? Any kind of fee? Know they are stealing your hardworking money. Let’s dive on into how to avoid fee with 4 simple easy ways!

Do not get me started on how much I hate fees!  They are horrible!  They steal your money!  They should not exist.  Ever open a bank account where you have to jump through hoops to get it to be free and not pay fees?

Yep! Us too!

They are the WORST! Hello…Wells Fargo and Bank of America!

We are not a fan of those two banks, but this is not an article about them!  It is about how to avoid fees and if you have a fee how to get rid of it! So let’s get rolling…

Look for a bank without fees (FREE checking!) It is out there!

Yes, free checking usually comes from local banks.  Where I am originally from, good ole Nebraska, I have free checking with First National Bank of Omaha.  Atlantic Union Bank is offering free banking in Virginia now. These banks usually have the best deals to as far as mortgage loans too! Do some research around from where you are from to avoid having these nasty fees and have a free checking account.  CapitalOne we use their Capital One Quicksilver Rewards Card, but we also know their CapitalOne 360 is a free checking account, but it is an online bank and only has bank locations in big cities usually.

If you bank with a bank with fees, ensure you play their rules

While having a free checking account is nice so you do not have to play their rules to avoid the fee sometimes you cannot get away from them.  Before you sign up for the checking or savings account ensure you read their information about fees.  Check off their rules to avoid it.  Most of the time you can get a fee pass if you have direct deposit into their checking account or if you have a certain amount of money in the account.

Do not be afraid to shop banks!

Got hit with a fee?  Call the bank and ask for forgiveness!

Got fee?  Get it…got milk? Only I would do this funny humor.

Let’s go ahead and try to get the fee taken off.  Most of the time they will remove one or two in a 12 month period, and some will even remove it in a 6 month period.

When you call say something like this, “Hi, I am a loyal member of your bank and I was just charged a fee of $— would you be able to remove it?”  Silence… Silence… let it be.  Remember do not let them give you the spin around if of “No, we are not able to do this”. Ask to talk to a manager.  They will be able to!  You have to be firm and remember it is just a worker.  They do not care about your finances.   No hard feelings here! They will go about their day the same way charging more fees and getting more customers to pay fees.

Even I’ve messed up before and it was in the last couple of weeks!  While I was changing my payments around from my personal bank to our joint account after getting married.  I forgot my one credit card that I do my monthly donation to sponsor my child was on auto payment with my personal account.  I was doing the end of the budget and saw a $20 F*&#@#*@ fee – I was so mad at the moment plus they charged me interest on it!  I thought to myself, Kailey, just calm down and call!  I called and they waived it for me and set up my auto payment for me too!  I killed two birds in one shot.

Multiple fees? Change banks now!

If month after month you are charged fees because you cannot keep the balance or you use an ATM in the same location each week or you just lost your job and do not have a direct deposit.  You need to take action now and change banks!

Do not let them steal your money!

$3 fees can add up!  Want me to show you?

  • $3 x 52 weeks = $156 in fees
  • $3 x 12 months = $36 in fees

You get the picture!

But lets take my fee for example earlier.  If I was late on that credit card every single month.  They would charge me $20 + 6.25% rate (this rate is an employee rate) Most rates are 18.99% – 25.99%.  That would add up to $240 a year plus interest, so my automatic donation comes out $39 per month.  $39 *.0645 = $29.25!

$269.25 per year in just fees and interest!

Let’s do a comparison with a non-employee rate.

$240 + ($39 * .2599) = $361.63 in fees and interest!

I am doing this comparison to make you angry at fees! Get mad at them.  Do not let them ruin your financial journey.  Do not let one fee take away any money from you!  You earn that money and you work hard for that money!

Now say with me, “I am going to call the bank and get that fee removed!”  “I am not going to let the bank have one more fee from me!”  “A little fee makes a huge difference and I will get it removed!”

Know you are a pro at avoiding bank fees and you can ensure you do not get those nasty money stealing monsters again!  Again, you work hard for your money so do not let a big glass building in a city steal it with fees.

Like this if you dislike fees just as much as we do!

Pin this to show love and support to your friends and family.

A little add on this article today, just because it is Christmas time and if you have a credit card that is not maxed out.  Please do your family a favor and do not add anymore to it.  Work on paying it off.  This quarantine Christmas is a PERFECT one to start because family and your friends will understand!  They will be okay with it.  You do not even need to tell them you are in financial trouble. You can say to them, “This quarantine Christmas, I think we are just going to enjoy each other’s company rather than getting a bunch of presents”. How we have no car payments and you can too!

Let me tell you a little secret…having no car payment is possible!  Personally, I don’t think I could ever go back to having a car payment.  Why?  I love being able to tell my money where it is going instead of paying a car dealer money on interest on a car that devalues.

Sell your new car with a huge payment!

Average car payments are around $350 – $500, which is a chunk of change right?

Imagine what you could do with that cash otherwise.

We travel! We create memories. You could too! That could be the money you are savings instead of wasting towards a car payment.  I want it for you too!

Feel like you are drowning in your car payment? Let’s downsize for a few years.  You might not be the coolest for a bit, but I loved my frugal cars!

Leasing? Don’t do it! Get rid of it! Sorry, if I was blunt there.

Car dealers love leases because they make so much money off of them!

Look for a frugal car not your dream car now.

Let me tell you my journey and my story.

I drove a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass in high school (2006). It was a grandma car!  Can I say embarrassing?  I got so upset at my mom, but it is all my mom could afford.  It had low miles and pretty much sat in a garage never being driven.  My friends thought it was cool though since I was the first one to be 16, August birthday blessing.  We used to drive around “the block” and thought we were so cool!  Can anyone please relate?  Small town fun!  Maybe you had a strip? Drive back and forth on it? Yes, we had that too in the smaller towns.

Work, work, work and save, save, save!

Then came me working a lot to save up for a better car, but I was also playing soccer so really it was mainly on the weekends and summer time when I was not playing soccer.

I wanted a yellow cobalt. Yes, yellow it was my car that I wanted.  I had to get an older version because it was within my range.  I wanted to pay about $6,000 for a car and for a person in high school that was a lot!  I had saved up about $2,000 to put a down payment on it. The rest I had to get cosigned with my mom because well I was 18. It was the spring of 2010, I was soon to be graduating and bought a blueish 2005 2 door cobalt.  It was not exactly what I wanted but my moms friend helped me find it.  He has helped us find all of our cars actually!  Find a car dealer salesman who you trust!

Keep your car until the wheels fall off, okay not really, but almost!

Little did I know this car was going to take me into every journey I had in life for 9 years!  Yes, I had this little cobalt for 9 years.  It traveled all the way to North Carolina from Nebraska with me. All I had when I moved to North Carolina was the stuff that could fit into it, so not much!

Work, work, work again plus saying, “No”

I paid the cobalt off my sophomore year of college, so it took me about 2 years.  I was not working at all my first year of college since I played soccer. Then my sophomore year came and I crushed that loan! I worked a lot – worked at Kroger, a baseball stadium, and babysitting on the weekend.

Putting every little penny into the car to pay it off.  Yes, no longer could I have my $5 Starbuck drinks. Yes, and I spent over $500 a month on Starbucks at one point in my life!  I have had my share of stupid money moves.  No longer could I get that muffin at the student library. I used to buy one every time I was there.  I had to say no to going to Noodles Company with my friends on Sunday afternoon right before our sorority meeting. This was a ritual to go get something with your sisters each afternoon after our first meeting.

But even though I had to say no to all of those things.

What I remember the most was writing the last check in the mail and saving “I paid off my car!” I thought to myself, what other college student could say this? “I have no car loan!”

Open A Savings Account

I did it.  I had no car payment!

It was amazing and felt like I was rich!

I opened another bank account and started stashing cash away for car repairs.  This “car repairs” fund actually turned into my car fund. I saved like I was paying a small car payment to myself.  It was just about $100 -$250 per month. Depending on the month and you know life does happen so there was a few times out of this fund I had to get items on the cobalt fixed.

I remember getting the struts fixed, new tires, regular oil changes, breaks, and pry a lot more.  This is all I remember!   Yes, I pretty much had the entire car fixed during these 9 years. Do not give up though.  It will be okay! Trust me!  Just fix the items and it will last for another 6 – 9 months a least.

I think even my heater broke at one time in the dead of winter! Can I tell you that sucked?

I could have bought a car easily about 5 years after having my cobalt, but once I saved up about $14,000 for the car I stopped placing the extra car payment into the saving account.  I just let it grow on its own.  I recommend if you find yourself in this place to open up a high yield saving account to let your money grow a little bit more than mine did!

How did I know it was time to buy a new car? My dream car?

Well, I prayed a lot!   I prayed for almost 2 years for God to show me who to give my Cobalt to.  I wanted to gift my car to someone.  I thought maybe it would have been someone who needed it at my store that I worked at. But it never felt right.  There was this young kid that needed a car who worked at one of my store, but I prayed on it and that didn’t seem to be the person to give my car to either.

As you all know, I met my husband at Kroger.  We started talking a few months after I left the store we worked at together.  People I went to school for HR! I know the rules, which is why we did not talk until after I left!

One day we went to the mountains for a two day trip. He drove because I would not let his dogs (now our dogs Gemma and Harbor) into my Cobalt. He had a Subaru and, on our way, back right by my apartment in the alley that we drove down.  His car broke down. Yes, we had to push it into my apartment car garage!

Don’t worry we called someone over from McDonalds to help us! Just imagine me – saying and waving down someone, “Hey! Will you come help us push the car?”  It was a good memory!

We had to figure out how Tom was going to get back to Virginia Beach in the morning! It is a two hour drive from my apartment.  Luckily, I was going to have a rental car for work so I took the rental and yes, I let the dogs in the cobalt and Tom took my car for the day.

Reality of Being “Under” on a Car

This is the first time we really talked about his car and still owing on it. It was broken down. It would cost more money to fix it than the car was worth and he still had a loan on it!

At this point, I knew I could afford to pay cash for a car.  I searched for cars that I wanted.  I had always wanted a Chevy Cruze, so I looked and researched and researched more to find one with good miles and a price I could afford.  I looked without telling Tom because I wanted him to look for something too even though he could not afford to pay for it with cash.  He was looking at trucks that were cheap.

We looked at cars for both of us a few days, and the one day we went to this 3rd car dealership and he’s like well lets check this truck out.  It is only $X amount and see if I like it.  The moment I prayed, “If I am suppose to buy a car and give Tom my car please give me a sign.”

God gave us a pretty good sign.

Tom got the keys.  We went to go start it up and test drive it.  Yep, it did not start! At this point Tom felt pretty defeated, but I felt confident I was suppose to make the moves to give him my car.

We got into my car and I saw a car in front of me gold and a car behind me gold.  This was the same color as the car I was looking at.  It was another good sign I should buy the car with cash and give my car to Tom.

That day I told Tom what I wanted to do and he said, “Are you sure?”  I told him I was positive!  I wanted to give him my car.

Giving like Christ and not being a Slave to the Lender.

We went to the car dealership I saw the Gold 2015 Chevy Cruze and I bought it with cash in 2018!  Well kinda, I paid with my credit cards to be able to get points. I am all about using credit cards smart and paying them off right away!

The same month I paid off the credit cards. Earned the points and bought my very first car $15,000 with cash! It rounded up to $15,000 because of the extra warranty I bought.  I recommend not getting these!  I have had my car now for over a year and have not used them.  Plus I have an emergency fund for anything that I need to repair!  I was a sucker at the moment!

We all make mistakes.  Probably why you are also reading this article to learn from me.

I am not going to put sparkles all over though.  After spending this much money, I had buyer’s remorse and sometimes still do to this day.  I have never seen this much money leave my bank account!  I know that it was much needed and I was supposed to do it, however, I think that I could have gotten away with a more frugal car.

However, I am glad now in 2020 we still have this car and we have gotten a pretty good ROI (return on investment) on the Cobalt and the Cruze! I hope to do the same thing with the Cruze one day to gift it to someone who needs to and we will go buy another “new” to us car.

After giving Tom my car, he was able to pay off the car that broke down. We sold the broken down car to someone and I had bought a car with cash.  We were golden!  Two cars that worked and then we were pregnant and Tom convinced me we needed to get a more reliable car than the Cobalt.

Saving up again…

We saved up for another car. Any extra money we received whether it was a bonus, gifted money from family, and taxes we put in the fund.  We also had an automatic savings set up to get the savings up too!  My husband gets paid weekly, so he took about 5% out of his paycheck to save up and then when we would almost hit a 100 mark or 1000 mark we would add just enough to make us over it.  For example, say we had $5790 dollars in the fund.  We would add $210 just to make us hit $6000 earlier than we had planned.  Especially if we had the money and if it was to be spend on something else on the budget like clothes or eating out or date night. I always said, “If it’s not in the checking account. We do not spend.” Once we had enough saved up around $11,000 we started looking for an SUV.  We searched and searched for weeks.  It was not a one day and done kinda deal.

We ended up going to other car dealerships before we knew it was the Subaru that we wanted. We bought the SUV with cash.

Now, we have two reliable cars that are paid with cash and zero car payments.  Can I say dream come true?  We will probably have these cars until they die as well especially if we keep up on the maintenance each year.

It is funny now though, because I saved up to buy my dream car a Chevy Cruze and guess who drives it now? My husband.  I end up driving the older car because it fits the car seat, stroller, and the dogs in it when we go for a hike.  And remember, I do not allow the dogs in my car usually. The Cruze is newer, so it makes sense for us to not allow them in it.  Plus it has black interior and white dog hair all over.  No thank you!

Once, you buy your car with cash!  Keep up on the maintenance!

Other ways to keep your car longer. We do maintenance on them, so both cars we just invested new tires on them.  Mostly for our safety, but for the cars too.  We give them baths and vacuum inside.  I always have a trash bag in my car for trash and we empty it out instead of throwing empty bottles in the passenger seat. We fill up the tank before it gets too low.
